As Printed Matter’s Bibliographer from 2007-2010, I had the great privilege of rifling through copies of just about every title that came through the store, and in so doing, I came to develop an affinity for a certain kind of artist’s book. In it, the artist arranges found images into a kind of catalog or index based on an organizing principle that is usually more intuitive than systematic. One image is followed by another that shares some formal similarity or visual association or maybe nothing at all. The onus is on the reader/viewer to pick up on visual rhymes and conversations imbedded in the flow of imagery or to consider them individually, like specimens.
